Modern C++ Design

Trainer: Mateusz Pusz (Epam Systems)

Workshop Description: C++ is no longer C with classes and it never was only an Object Oriented language. C++ is a general-purpose programming language. It has imperative, object-oriented and generic programming features, while also providing facilities for low-level memory manipulation. If used correctly, it provides hard to beat performance. Such usage requires a good knowledge of C++ templates and Modern C++ Idioms which are much different from commonly known design patterns popularized by GoF book and invented to handle common use cases in pure OO languages like Java or C#.

What you will learn: During the workshop, we will refresh and broaden our knowledge about C++ templates and will learn Modern C++ Design Patterns. Crafting those skills will allow us to build powerful tools that are useful in the everyday work of every C++ developer.

Experience required: In order to be able to follow the workshop, you should be current with C++ and have some recent experience with writing simple C++ templates. C++11/14 knowledge is suggested but not mandatory.

Environment: A laptop with a relatively new C ++ compiler. It is recommended to have the latest version of one of the compilers (Visual Studio, gcc or clang).

Dirty Little Tricks From The Dark Corners of eCommerce

Trainer: Vitaly Friedman (smashingmagazine.com)

Workshop description: When designing eCommerce experiences, we tend to prioritize what we want to say rather than how it’s actually said. It’s not easy because there are literally hundreds of things that can go wrong: from selecting a product, to adding an item to the cart, to getting that final confirmation email, to actually receiving the purchased item. Every step along the way has to be meticulously designed with an eye for error and potential misunderstandings. It affects interaction with filters as much as displaying shipping options or sending a shopping cart abandonment email. In this full-day workshop, Vitaly will be covering quite a few design patterns, checklists, strategies and interface design techniques to increase conversion by improving clarity and consistency of the eCommerce experience and sparkling a little bit of delight here and there. You’ll walk away with hands-on tips and techniques for crafting better eCommerce experience right away.

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

  • How to frame a product, the pricing and the layout in a way to increase engagement and reduce abandonment (based on actual case study from 2017’s Smashing Magazine’s Membership design and launch),
  • How to design the perfect responsive checkout flow, from adding an item to the cart to confirming payment details,
  • How to keep customers engaged and delighted while completing mundane tasks,
  • Ways of reducing error rate by preventing common mistakes and causes for login failures,
  • Full strategy on reducing shopping cart abandonment with better and smarter checkout UX,
  • Practical guidelines and rules of thumbs from mid-size and large eCommerce projects, i.e. how to deal with guest checkout, faceted search, filters, autocomplete, smart defaults, progressive checkout, forgiving input, form labels, product lists, navigation, carousels, product comparison, pricing options, shipping costs, delivery times, coupon codes, transactional emails and interface copy,
  • How to deal with sensitive data, email, password, social logins and privacy or security issues,
  • How to optimize the shopping experience and specifically the checkout experience for mobile views, and how to use Facebook Messenger, Apple Pay etc. to improve UX and boost conversion,
  • Innovative examples of better, smarter and faster checkout/sign-up flows and how they’re done,
  • How to improve perceived performance of the forms with skeleton screens and progress indicators,
  • A complete strategy and a set of eCommerce checklists for pricing tables, shopping cart page and the checkout flow to use when working on any kind of eCommerce projects.

Experience required: Bring in a problem, or an example of a checkout you’d love to improve, with you — we’ll be solving it right on spot. Also, enough sleep is required since we’ll get through a lot of stuff through the day!

Environment: You will need a laptop.

Deep learning for developers

Trainer: Krzysztof Kudryński (TomTom), Blażej Kubiak (TomTom)

Workshop description: No one knows how far away we are from artificial general intelligence. It can happen soon. It may happen later. It might never happen. It is however already granted that machines will learn to drive, cook and code. If you are in danger of being replaced by a machine because your job is related to any of the above skills (excluding driving and cooking), this workshop is for you!

Why our workshop?

According to our rough calculation, in the web, you can find seventy-three thousand, four hundred and eighty-three deep learning workshops. We think some of them have a lot of great content, some of them are really fun to follow, so if you have spare 4-5 years of your life, we strongly encourage you to go through them all and pick the most valuable parts for you. As an alternative, you can join our workshop. Here is why:

  • We will learn by exploring real-life cases from computer vision and data mining, looking for solution in a natural way (brainstorm, check off-the-shelf solutions, understand and improve or build own components from scratch when necessary)
  • We will not be slapping layers’n’stuff with our fingers crossed. We will be choosing or building our solutions with full awareness of what problems are being tackled and what the specific components and layers are offering us.
  • There will be no strong focus on a particular framework. We will be working in Python and Java mostly with Keras, Tensorflow, DeepLearningForJ and Caffe (sorted by level of attention)
  • You will be guided by two passionate guys with over 5 years of professional, academic and hobbistic experience in various AI projects, already recognized by the international conference community (top voted talks at Devoxx Belgium 2016 and 2017, Devoxx Poland 2016 and 2017, Geecon 2017 and Mobilization 2016, guest speakers at NVIDIA GTC 2016 and more)

What you will learn:

  • Identify problems screaming (or whispering) for deep-learning based solution
  • Choose (if available) or design your architecture knowing your hardware and time constraints
  • Implement your solution in most popular languages (java/python) and frameworks (tensorflow, keras, deeplearningforJ, caffe)
  • Reuse available solutions (trained in weeks on enormous datasets) to adapt them to your different tasks and limited resources
  • Diagnose the learning process, spot problems and look for solutions with understanding

Experience required: This workshop is for developers who wish to gain or improve their skills in using state-of-the art artificial intelligence in practice. For best experience, attendees should be familiar with Python and Java. Basic knowledge of neural networks would be a plus. However, all the material covered in this workshop will have a proper, brief introduction so that both beginners and returning experts can keep up.

Environment: Your own laptop. Ideally make sure you can work with (and have installed) the following: Python3 and Keras with Tensorflow Java7+ and DeepLearningForJ You can use IDE of your choice. We will be using PyCharm and IntelliJ.

Press The Damn Button: The Digital Mindset Shift Required to Stand-Out and Change the World!

Trainer: Brian Fanzo (iSocialfanz)

Workshop description: It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in or if you’re an entrepreneur, small business owner or leader in a fortune 500 business, investing in telling your story and creating content is paramount for achieving your personal and business goals in 2018 and beyond. The problem is nobody outside of marketers like to market or sell themselves, and the idea of “branding” your story or putting yourself out there is not only scary but unnatural. The smartphone and social media have transformed how we as customers and professionals consume and create content, network with clients and most importantly humanize our business. It used to be about online vs. offline, but today it’s about embracing a world that’s hyper-connected that requires on-demand access to people, places, and experiences. It’s essential that each of us tells our story while embracing the fact that we are all the producers of own reality series and as producers, our story is only compelling if we shift our mindset and allow people into our world by pressing the damn button. In this workshop Brian will walk the audience through the importance of being “relatable” online and why it doesn’t matter if it's starting a blog, launching a podcast, going live on Facebook live or creating an episodic video series for YouTube, you must shift your mindset, create a strategy and most importantly PRESS THE DAMN BUTTON!

What you will learn: Importance of sharing your digital WHY with the world as Perfection is a fairytale, control is an illusion and what you do is boring. Transparency doesn't guarantee trust and authenticity, but when leveraged strategically it becomes the key to growing a community and being relatable in this always-on world. Why your vulnerabilities and limitations when embrace become your strongest assets for connecting and fostering digital relationships To create a memorable digital storytelling strategy you must first create content where you’re most comfortable with focusing on the platforms where your customers and community are engaging. Nobody will tell you that you’re helping too much, you care too much or that your story related with them too much but your story reaches NOBODY till you PRESS THE DAMN BUTTON
